This one is real data. We took elevation data for a 20 x 20 mile square centered on downtown Memphis, sliced it into west-to-east profiles, and stacked them from north to south. Every bump on every line is actual terrain, smoothed a little so the lines print clean.
Inside the square, the ground runs from about 192 feet along the Mississippi to about 392 feet on the highest ground, roughly 200 feet of relief. The flat lines are the river bottoms on the Arkansas side; the rise is the bluff line Memphis is built on, cut by the Wolf River, the Loosahatchie River and Nonconnah Creek.

The lines are scaled so you can see small changes. The biggest rise is the line of bluffs along the east bank of the Mississippi, with the flat floodplain to the west.
