The settlement grew fast thanks to the navigable Cumberland River and the rich soil of the Highland Rim, which produced dark-fired tobacco that became famous in markets across England, France, Germany, and Italy. By 1858, Clarksville was shipping more than eighteen thousand hogsheads of tobacco a year, and the river and later the railroad kept the town connected to the wider trade world.
Today Clarksville is Tennessee's fifth largest city and the second oldest in Middle Tennessee behind Nashville. The city marked its 240th anniversary of settlement in 2025, and that long history still shows up in the historic architecture downtown and at sites like Fort Defiance.
